The discipline of the Nuclear Science and Technology at the Beijing Normal University was first established in 1958 as a Nuclear Physics major in the Department of Physics, and was one of the first few institutes in China to initiate the scientific researches on nuclear science and technology. In 1979, the Beijing Normal University and the Beijing municipality jointly founded the Low Energy Nuclear Physics Institute (Beijing Radiation Center), and the College of Nuclear Science and Technology was then founded in 2008. The College of Nuclear Science and Technology was one of the first few institutes, who were authorized to grant doctorate degrees in theoretical physics, particle and nuclear physics, condensed matter physics, and nuclear technology and applications. In addition, the college was also authorized to grant master’s degrees in optics, material physics, and chemistry. Throughout the development of the Project 985 “Non-Power Nuclear Technology Innovation Platform” and the Project 211, in the area of theoretical, experimental, and applicational research on the nuclear science the technology, especially in the fields including high intensity ion beam, microarc oxidation, ion beam implantation and material surface property modification, x-ray adjustment and control technology, radiation physics, nuclear electronic, heavy ion nuclear physics, and etc., the college has built disciplines with own characteristics, and made important achievement in the area of discipline development, scientific research, talents cultivation, and social services.

Supported by the College of Nuclear Science and Technology (and Beijing Radiation Center) at the Beijing Normal University, the “Key Laboratory of Beam Technology and Material Surface Modification of Ministry of Education” grants open access to the domestic as well as international scholars, who study the interaction between beam and matter and the related fields. The College of Nuclear Science and Technology (and Beijing Radiation Center) holds a state-level key discipline in theoretical physics, a city-level key discipline in condensed mater physics, a university-level key discipline in nuclear technology and applications. The college has been awarded three state-level prizes and several tens of provincial- and ministerial-level prizes, publishes around 50 high-level scientific research papers annually, acquires up to 10 domestic and international patents in each year, and achieved widely impacted research accomplishments. The college has cultivated a handful of talents including several National Distinguished Young Scholars, National 100 Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation, and U.S. Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. The college actively participated in social service and made significant contribution in propelling the development in the transition from laboratory to industrialization for national defense and nuclear technology. From the ranking published by the ministry of education in 2013, the College of Nuclear Science and Technology and the Department of Physics jointly participated in the ranking process and achieved the remarkable 12th place in the physics discipline, which was 3 places higher than the last time. In the recent 5 years, from the ranking organized by the Wuhan University, the college ranked 4th place 4 times and 5th place 1 time among 22 universities in the area of nuclear science and technology. In 2013, the college ranked the 4th among 22 universities in the field of nuclear science and technology.

The College of Nuclear Science and Technology (and Beijing Radiation Center) is home to 50 employees, among which there are one Member of the Chinese Academy of Science, 17 Full Professors (Researchers). The dean of the College of Nuclear Science and Technology (and head of the Beijing Radiation Center) is Professor Fengshou Zhang, Chief Secretary of Party Committee is Jianwu Liu, and head of the Academic Affairs is Professor Wenbin Xue, and head of the Development Affairs is the Academician and Professor Naiyan Wang.
